Hi jef.j.wright, it sounds like you have the “Auckland Big Four” on your hands!

You are spot on with your logic. For a suburban section where you have a variety of plants growing closely together, one of these should work for you:

Original gel (low strength – 120g/L glyphosate)
Bamboo Buster (double strength 240g/L glyphosate)
Glimax (triple strength 450g/L glyphosate and 0.5% surfactants)

Here is why one of these will fit your needs:

– No Soil Residuals: the Original, Bamboo Buster & Glimax gels contain glyphosate which deactivates once it touches the soil. This eliminates the risk of “collateral damage” to nearby prize plants through translocation. In contrast, our other stronger products (Picloram or MetGel) can translocate to other plants, as they are ground residual.

– Moth Plant Success: If you can’t use Picloram or Metgel, then yes, Original, Bamboo Buster & Glimax gels are still effective on Moth Plant, where other sensitive plants are nearby! The key is to cut the vine close to the ground and apply the gel to the stump immediately within 15 seconds – (before the milky sap seals the cut).

– Simplicity: Original, Bamboo Buster & Glimax gels will also handle your Woolly Nightshade and Privet effectively. For the Jasmine, you’ll need to be diligent – treat every cut runner, as Jasmine is notoriously stubborn.

A quick tip for the future:
If you eventually tackle the Agapanthus and Arum Lilies, Bamboo Buster will work, but those two are quite tough. You may need to apply a slightly thicker layer or “score” the side of the Agapanthus clumps before applying to ensure it gets right into the storage rhizomes.

One method is to start with low strength and work up as needed… One bottle of Bamboo Buster is a safe and simple way to protect your soil while reclaiming your section!
